Clients -vs- Association reponsibilities

I have long believed that many of those in Realtor Association leadership are "used-to-do-ers" versus "do-ers" ... meaning that they used to do real estate stuff, whereas now from the leadership positions, they are no longer actively and directly involved in the boots-on-the-ground, in the trenches real estate - showing houses, opening lockboxes, negotiating contracts, using ZipForms to write offers, paying enormous amounts of money to fill up the gas tank two and three times a week ... (I accept and embrace my occasional cynicism)

This is a problem with leadership - once you're identified as a "leader" and accept some of those accompanying responsibilities the risk becomes apparent that "leading" may take precedence over "doing". And without doing, your leadership may become less relevant to those you are trying to lead.

See how convoluted that Catch-22 can be?

Which gets me to this - this morning I have a choice.

1 -Either go to the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors for the local candidate interviews, where we interview candidates for local political offices - a very important and interesting step in the political process - that absolutely impacts real estate in the Charlottesville area. I enjoy some meetings; this is one of those meetings.

2 - Attend a closing with clients (whom I happen to really like).

That I debated this choice even for a minute was a kick in the pants that I need to ensure that I don't lose focus - my real estate business and clients always come first. I'm grateful for the ability to evaluate myself (and my wife helps too!).

Sure, I'd like to be a "leader" but I choose to lead by doing.
